UPCOMING SOLO EXPO
san·to (noun) | ˈsän-(ˌ)to | plural santos
⇒ a saint or the representation of one
Starting from an interest in (older) believes, religions and in turn the works of art associated with them, the idea came up to use the powerful and dramatic emotion of these works.
In essence most of these old works were made with the intent to connect the “common man” with the greatness of (a) god. Yet now they are up for grabs, available in abundance as .jpg’s online, photographed from all different angles and uploaded in the thousands by tourists.
By taking these works and subtracting or adding new elements and symbols, they are stripped of their meaning and a new one is created.
Due to this fascination with images of old statues and paintings, often depicting greek/roman gods or figures and symbols from the bible, a collaboration with SANTO only seemed fitting. There’s no such thing as coincidence. SANTO, being a project to combat the vacancy of an old industrial building, provides for an ideal place with its own character.
